Custom Tilt Steering Column Installation

Classic Chevy: Custom Tilt Steering Column Installation

-Alan Arnell

After my old original factory steering column got all loosey-goosey, I installed a new tilt column conversion for my 1957 Chevy 150 sedan, not a Bel Air hardtop.  I purchased a custom made tilt column that bolted right in my Classic Chevy.  I bought mine off of eBay, however there are many vendors to purchase a new column for your car.  Thank God, you will not have to hunt junk yards to find a column you could use, because that animal is no longer out there for the common man to find. Nor, will you have to complete modifications to make the column fit in your Hot Rod.

My new column came with at 4-way flasher system built in.  The column uses a Trifive type tilt head that allowed me to use an original late 50's steering wheel.

All-in-all, a very easy swap.

Tools you may need will be:

  1. A 1/2", 1/4" & 11/16" wrench
  2. A 1/4" allen wrench
  3. A wheel puller
  4. A Ratchet with extension & 1/2", 1/4", 3/8" socket

Using the correct type and number of mounts to secure your tilt steering column will ensure that you have a safe and responsive steering system. The pros at ididit make a variety of universal steering column mounts to suit nearly any vehicle. The video below shows a typical installation of the ididit tilt steering column along with a swivel ball floor mount and a column drop.
