Dallas, Texas Custom Car Show

Autorama The Word of Wheels

Dallas, TexasCustom Car ShowFeb 19, 2016Dallas Market Hall (Dallas Market Center)

  -Alan Arnell

As I lounge on my couch today, I am sadly thinking, that North Texas car show events are beginning to go into a lull for the mild South Western United States winter.  With the football game droning in the background a light bulb went on over my head.  The Dallas Autorama is only around 60 days away!

The Autorama is a big deal for me and my Car Club the Dallas Area Classic Chevy Club (DACC).  For the club it is a great form to show the best of the best of our club member’s Classic Chevy Tri-Fives.  The show presents the best recruiting tool for club membership as well.  DACC has already started making plans for our eight car display of 1955, 56 & 57 Chevys with a good showing of BelAirs, 210s, 150s, sedans, hard tops, wagons, Corvettes and Nomads.

I have been lucky to meet Henry Winkler

For me, I enjoy absorbing all the great classic car in attendance at the Autorama.  The vendors are alway fun to visit and purchase items.  I have also been able to meet many pillars of the car game.  When learning that George Barris had passed away  I went to my signed picture of him, that I was happy to receive at the Autorama, to have a moment of silence.  Going to the Autorama, I have been lucky to meet Henry Winkler, Cindy Williams, Courtney Hansen, Candy Clark, Micky Dolenz, Daryl “Moose” Johnson and Vinny Dimartino just to name a few.  Don’t forget the monster trucks, cacklefests, motorcycle stunt riders, burnout contests, NASCAR drivers and cars and last but not least Goober Lindsey from Mayberry.

A modeler as a youngster the Autorama does not disappoint by having a whole floor dedicated to the model
hobby.  I usually take an hour or two checking out the models cars and diecast cars among many other items up on the second floor.

As you can imagine my time is spent mostly with Tri-Five Chevys events.  The Autorama is a super way for me to see other aspects of the classic car hobby.  At the show, I look forward to inspecting all of the new trends and what people are into in the car hobby.

DACC sets up a membership/information table that I generally volunteer to work for half a day of the show schedule.  Seeing the young people’s faces upon seeing our cars and talking to the more experienced folks about their experiences with the Tri-Five that they had or the car his or her parents owned, brings back great memories and is great fun for me.

The Autorama...showcases a wide range of products and services

The Autorama is Dallas/Forth Worth’s premier indoor custom car show.  The event also showcases a wide range of products and services related to the automotive and auto parts sectors from leading exhibitors.  The show is put on and organized by  Championship Auto Shows Inc.

Prior to the Dallas O’Reilly Auto Parts Autorama car fans will enjoy an Autoram  at:
  • Cavalcade of Customs Car Show 1/10/216 at Cincinnati
  • Innovative Autoworks World of Wheels car show 1/22/2016 at Pittsburg
  • O’Reilly Auto Parts World of Wheels 2/12/2016 at Indianapolis
  • O’Reilly Auto Parts World or Wheels 2/12/2016 at Kansas City
  • Auto Parts World of Wheels also 2/19 at Calgary, Canada
  • Meguiar’s Autorama 3/18/2016 at the Detroit Autorama

Back to today. not all that interested in the football game, I went to DACC’s collection of web page pictures of
our cars in several venues.   I have attached a link to some great pictures for your viewing pleasure: http://www.dallasclassicchevy.com/Pictures2015.htm

Below is a blurb I wrote for an Dallas Autorama, that I attended a few years ago.  The blurb brought back many fond memories and made me look forward to 2016’s Autorama and all of the classic car events I will be able to experience.

I wrote this blurb under the pen name of Buddy Love.  So this one is for Buddy.

Dallas Autorama
  -Buddy Love

There is a word in the English language that Dallas car people recognize, it’s the Autorama. Put Dallas in front of Autorama and you have a premier kicker of an indoor event. Hundreds of the best and most beautiful cars from all over North Texas and beyond poured into the Market Hall to compete for show awards and bragging rights. During the show, no matter where I went people’s faces told the story of true amazement at the quality of cars entered in the show.

During the Sunday portion of the event the weather started out with a raucous thunder storm, but that did not
keep car fans from getting their money’s worth with hundreds of quality customs, muscle cars, hot rods, motorcycles, lawnmowers and at least one boat. When not looking at custom transportation and dragsters, car fans had a great selection of vendor’s booths that showed the latest tools and parts for you car. In the non car line, the show had something for young and old alike. You could play Guitar hero, buy die cast or race radio controlled cars. As always, Tri-five Chevys seem to be a hot item at the show.

The Dallas Area Classic Chevy Club made a display of 8 cars. The club display showed a sampling of all three years of Tri-five Chevy’s including a Corvette, Handy Man’s Panel wagon and a full race ‘55. My personal favorite was a Matador Red, 4 door, 57 Chevy Belair with an India Ivory hardtop. I grew up in a very similar Adobe Beige and ivory model. The club's members we not limited to the club display. I saw at least 3 club members’ cars in solo displays.

Like me, I hope you are looking forward to the  many 2016 Texas Classic Car Experiences to go to next year.

Over 400,000 people attended the show, which makes it the largest automotive event in the DFW Metroplex.

For us Tri-Five lovers the gleaming chromed late 50’s cars were the finest looking cars in the entire show.

2016 Dallas Autorama Car Pictures

2016 Dallas Autorama Car Pictures
Dallas Area Classic Chevy Club Display Setup and Exhibit
  -Alan Arnell

North Texas loves the Automobile.  The Autorama at Dallas Market Hall was a great start of the car show season in North Texas and a wonderful event for the car lover.  Innovative workmanship was celebrated with the displays of traditional hot rods, customs and bobbers during the three-day stop of the Autorama in Dallas from Friday, February 19th until Sunday February 21st.

My car club, the Dallas Area Classic Chevys, (DACC) set up a display of 8 cars for the Autorama.  David, our club President put together another great display of club members’ Classic Tri-Five Chevrolets.  This year's display was DACC’s 39th year in a row that the club put together a club exhibit.  At this year's Autorama, DACC brought to the show two 1957 Chevy Convertibles, two 1955 Bel Airs, a 1956 Bel Air, a 1956 Nomad, and a 1955 Convertible.   My club member’s cars attracted the fancy of the Autorama spectator.

While I attended the show enjoy the great cars of course.  I also, toured the tuner gallery, the model car contest, the Toy-a-Rama and a lowrider cruise. For an added treat this year a special live concert was performed by Danny the “Count” Koker from the TV show counting cars along with the band “Count’s 77”.  Along with “Count Koker” and his band there was also special appearances by celebrities Sean Whitley, driver of the Farm Truck and his side kick ANZ who are on the TV show “Street Outlaws”.  From a distance, I saw Emma Post from "Jersey" and WWE wrestler Daniel Bryan.

In addition to the normal Autorama experience I helped my club members set up the club’s display exhibit.  We had all eight of our cars together in one display area.  We rented a carpet for our display and also use our own standards and flagged rope to separate the display.  The club displayed signage that celebrated the Tri-Five Chevy.

I helped construct the sign’s holding scaffolding and helped string the separation rope.  For each car we made an information poster.  I helped assemble small easels to hold the metal clad individual car posters and helped push and drive the display cars into position.

We generally like to have non showing club member help to set up the display as the car owners spend most of his and her time preparing their cars for the largest indoor car show in the DFW Metroplex.  My car is a driver and not really an Autorama show type of car, so I did not bring my 1957 model 150 2-door sedan to the show.

I also worked the information and recruitment table for a four hour shift one morning.  The club had printed 1000 free hero card handouts for our spectators.  The hero cards were 8 by 11 inches in size.  The information posters were metal backed and were 20 by 30 inches in size.  Each poster gave information for the cars on display and information for DACC’s 40th year Anniversary Show.

DACC was formed in 1976 and is the nation's largest exclusive Tri Five Chevy local car club as of 2016. We will be 40 years old this year.

This April, DACC will celebrate its 40th Anniversary by having the “Dallas Area Classic Chevys Car Club’s 1955-1957 Chevy Show”.  The show will be held on Sunday, April 10th from 1 to 4 PM at Reliable Chevrolet, located at Arapaho and Central Expressway in Richardson, Texas.

There will be no entry fees and admission for spectators is FREE for the show.  All 1955 to 1957 Chevy Cars, trucks and Corvettes are welcomed to display.  Club membership is not required to show your car at the Anniversary Show.  At the show you will see pristine Tri-Five show cars, drivers, race cars, traditionals and projects.  Over 100 Tri-Fives are expected to be in attendance!

During the show random door prizes will be given away.  The oldies band “Johnny Diamond and the Silver Hubcaps” will perform. During the concert there will be contests for best 50's dressed, hula hoop twirling and dance the twist competitions.

Celebrity judges will be in attendance.  Candy Clark who starred as Debbie in the hit movie American Graffiti will make an appearance.

As always at the DACC Spring Show will not have formal judging.  All awards given for “outstand cars” will be picked by celebrities and sponsors.

The “Car Guy Show” TV program will have a film crew at the 40th Anniversary show to film an upcoming episode of the show.

I personally invite each and everyone of my readers to attend the show.  Please bring and  show your Tri Five Chevy car, truck or Corvette.  Or, just come to the show to see over 100 great looking cars and eat free birthday cake with us!  All in all, a fun filled afternoon of shiny Chevrolets and 50’s nostalgia!  More info at www.DallasClassicChevy.com.

As a spectator at the Autorama, I took a walk around Market Hall and took pictures of my favorite cars at the show.  Enjoy.
