2016 Texas Thaw

2016 Texas Thaw

  -Alan Arnell

Texas Thaw Vintage Drags and Car Show was held March 4, 2016 at the North Star Dragway located in Denton, Texas by the Torques Car Club with special guest the Vintage Doll.

Since 2007 the Texas Thaw classic car event has been a great start of the car show and drag racing season in North Texas.  The Thaw is an event that features pre ‘73 customized cars, classic cars, street rods and hot rods. There is also a drag racing competition, swap meet, food sales and live music. Proceeds goes to the USO to benefit U.S. military troops serving overseas.  Dry camping for self-contained campers and RVs was available for contestants at the track during the event.

This year the ninth Texas Thaw event began with a Test & Tune Friday night. The full event began at 8:00 AM, Saturday morning.

The Thaw was conceived and born when a group friends were sitting around talking about wanting to get together with more hot rod/ folks in the North Texas area and beyond.  From inception to fruition the first Thaw was put together in an unbelievable two months stretch. The first and subsequent Thaws have alway been huge successes! If you have not been to one you certainly missed out and must attend next year's Thaw.

The hosting car club for the Thaw was The Torques Car Club of DFW. The Touques was resurrected from the original Torques Car Club from Saint Louis Missouri formed in 1956.  Torques’ founding members in DFW got permission from many of the original members from the former club in Saint Louis to bring the group back to life in Texas.
The Thaw is about hot rod cars, racing and a good cause.  The Torques are a non-profit organization that donates proceeds every year from the Thaw to the USO/Unite for Troops.

This year the Thaw saw an additional fund raising activity put together by Toolsville/Hugh & Vee Ashburn. They hosted a silent auction which featured Tools, performance parts, and gift certificates. Proceeds from the auction were given to the UnBreakABull (Pit Bull Dog Rescue).
I have shown and raced my 1957/150, non-Bel Air, Tri-Five Chevy at previous Thaws as well as gone as a spectator.  I was unable to attend this year.  However, each Thaw I have gone to was a total blast and what I have been told this year was no exception.

Fellow hot rodder Royboy Productions covered the Thaw again this year.  As always he did a great job of taking pictures of the event.  To check out his photos go to buff.ly/1OYZqYZ
